Session / Elders
Presbyterian congregations are governed by Elders who are elected from and by the congregation. The word "Presbyterian" comes from the Greek word presbuteros, which simply means "Elder." The governing body of elected Elders for a local congregation is called the Session. Elders are typically elected for three-year terms to the Session, and retain the title of Elder for life.
The Session is responsible for the mission and government of the congregation. Much of the work of the Session is carried out through a number of standing committees, which rely on the generous donation of time and talents from members of the congregation to carry out the mission and ministry of the church.
